COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA9) — A brush fire began in College Park, Md. and spread on Friday afternoon, according to Prince George’s County Fire.

The fire began on the 2800 block of Metezerott Road and it spread to several acres. It was near a Pepco sub-station and power lines.

Prince George’s County Fire had units on location to protect homes in the College Park Woods community and homes near Cherokee Lane Elementary School.

Brush fires can start under conditions similar to Friday's, where the weather is dry and warm. Humidity is also low and there hasn't been much rain recently in the area. All of these things lend themselves to a brush fire starting.
