2 dead, 1 injured after crash with Peapod truck in Silver Spring

Several patients were pulled out of the wreckage and were transported to a nearby hospital with traumatic injuries.

SILVER SPRING, Md. -- Multiple people were injured after a crash in Silver Spring involving a Peapod truck and a car Saturday morning authorities said.

According to fire officials, it happened on New Hampshire Avenue near North Hampton Drive.

Several patients were pulled out of the wreckage and were transported to a nearby hospital with traumatic injuries.

Police say that the Peapod truck, driven by James Richard Bailey Jr., was traveling southbound on New Hampshire Avenue, when it hit a 1997 Toyota Corolla traveling northbound on New Hampshire Avenue and trying to make a left turn.

The driver, Ismael Melchor, 39, of Hyattsville, died of his injuries at the scene. One of his passengers, Maribel Zelaya de Reyes, 41, of Hyattsville, was transported to the hospital and died of her injuries. Another passenger, an adult male, was transported to the hospital in life-threatening condition.

The Peapod driver was not injured.
