Prince William police to deploy body worn cameras in fall

Police in Virginia's second largest county will be rolling out body cameras.

Police in Virginia's second largest county will be rolling out body cameras.

The Prince William County Police Department said Monday that the agency will deploy body cameras beginning in September and continuing through the end of the year.

Chief Barry Barnard said the cameras promote accountability and transparency and help build trust with the community.

The decision comes after a running a pilot program last year testing two different camera systems.

Police expect the cameras to cost $1.3 million in the first year, and about $4 million over five years.
