Riverfront camps shut down in face of Potomac River flood

The Potomac River is expected to crest at over 18 feet in Brunswick late Sunday. That is more than two feet above flood stage.

BRUNSWICK, Md. - The Brunswick Family Campground is among the Potomac riverfront recreation sites that have have been evacuated in the face of rising waters.

"We're just getting everybody out of the campground and making sure everybody is safe," said Jennifer Flora, the assistant manager of the site. "The last tent camper left about an hour ago," she said at about noon on Friday.

At least five portable buildings, a half-dozen camp trailers and numerous vehicles were moved to higher ground.

Sections of the C&O Canal towpath between Harpers Ferry and Great Falls also are being closed for safety reasons by the National Park Service, which has posted numerous advisories on its website. Most boat ramps and river access sites in Frederick County, Md. and Montgomery County also are closed.

Sections of the Billy Goat Trail in Great Falls Park are also closed due to rising water.
