UPPER MARLBORO, Md. -- Former UMD basketball player Damonte Dodd was indicted on rape charges Friday, according to Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks.
The charges include second-degree rape, second-degree assault and other related charges for having sex with an intoxicated woman in November of 2017.
Dodd was taken into custody on Thursday after returning from an overseas trip.
“The fact that the victim in this case was intoxicated did not give Mr. Dodd the right to take advantage of her,” Alsobrooks said Friday.
She says that she plans to conduct a "thorough investigation and ensure that [Dodd] is held accountable for his actions."
According to officials, on October 31, 2017, the victim and friends went to Terrapin's Turf Bar to celebrate Halloween. There, the victim and Dodd met for the first time and he bought her alcoholic drinks. Later, Dodd left the bar with her, taking her to a College Park apartment.
Authorities say in the early hours of November 1, while the victim was intoxicated, Dodd had sexual intercourse with her against her will.
Another occupant woke up and confronted Dodd.
The victim reported the incident to the police five days later. Dodd admitted to having sex, but claimed it was consensual.
Dodd is currently being held in Atlanta, Georgia. His next hearing is scheduled for July 12 at the Prince George's County courthouse.
