FALLS CHURCH, Va. (WUSA9) — More than 40 people are searching for a place to stay after a three-alarm fire ravaged multiple townhouses on the 2800 block of Pine Spring Road.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at approximately 3:55 p.m. Sunday, and found smoke and fire billowing from multiple townhouse units within the three-story building.

The dry, windy weekend weather conditions made the fire difficult to control and it spread quickly. This prompted additional aid from the Arlington County Fire Department and the City of Fairfax Fire Department.

While the building did have smoke alarms, they did not activate because the fire was on the building’s exterior. It likely started from “discarded smoking material,” according to the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department.

One police officer was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.

The Red Cross is providing aid to the 41 occupants.
