WASHINGTON — Starting Feb. 19, work crews in Washington D.C. will begin installing more ‘No Right Turn on Red’ signs.
The city is banning right turns at red lights for about 100 intersections all over the city.
The goal is to cut down the number of people dying in traffic accidents.
In 2018, 36 people were killed in traffic accidents in DC. That was the highest number of traffic deaths the city has seen in 10 years.
However, there are critics who do not believe the move by the District Department of Transportation is a good one.
“In school zones, it is inherently wise to do that. In other places that you have a high traffic volume and high pedestrian volume, it may be a catastrophic situation,” John Townsend, spokesperson with AAA Mid-Atlantic, said.
Townsend believes DDOT should complete a detailed study on each intersection before installing the signs.
He fears the move may have negative impacts.
“That it would cause more injuries, more fatalities, it would cause more rear-end collisions,” Townsend said.
DDOT Director Jeff Marootian told WUSA9 the agency operates on facts and explained how banning right turns on red lights has worked in other cities.
“We’ve used a scientific approach to identify locations that have a particularly high volume of pedestrians,” Marootian said. “Those are the locations for which we think that improving safety in the intersection is paramount.”
The implementation of the new signs a part of the mayor’s ‘vision zero‘ initiative aimed at limiting traffic deaths in DC by 2024.
