UDC grows lacrosse program

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- With teams including Maryland, Georgetown, Navy and Johns Hopkins, the Metro area has more than there fair share of competitive teams.

But there's one program you may not have heard of yet, University of the District of Columbia Firebirds.

Perhaps someday the University of the District of Columbia will join the conversation of local lacrosse powers as now they are a program truly in its infancy.

After getting the green light to start a program back in 2012, UDC is finishing up its second year in existence this season, playing in the East Coast Conference in Division II.

UDC coach Scott Urick came over from Georgetown where he was a former player and an assistant coach for the Hoyas.

UDC is currently without an on campus "home" field, rather playing their games at Georgetown University and practicing at nearby Wilson High School in Northwest D.C..

This is all a part of the growing pains of growing a program but the school is planning on having a lacrosse facility on campus soon.

"Having something on your campus is obviously much more enticing," Urick said. "That will certainly make a difference for our program and certainly make a difference for recruiting no doubt about that."

The program has big goals and is recruiting nationally. UDC's curent roster has a national and international feel to it, with four players hailing from Canada.

The Firebirds have gone 2-8 during the 2015 season. Their last game of the season will be April 25th against Roberts Wesleyan at Georgetown University.
