A 16-year-old girl has died after being shot in Southeast, D.C. Friday, Metropolitan Police said.
The shooting happened at about 11:42 a.m. in the 1200 block of I Street. Police said Breyona McMillian was found unconscious and unresponsive. She later died at a hospital.
The high schooler was shot in a driveby shooting while talking to friends outside the Potomac Gardens apartments near Capital Hill and just a few blocks from the Marine Barracks. She was here visiting her family for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
A GoFundMe page has been created to help pay for funeral costs: Justice for Bre.
At the crime scene, police taped off several vehicles, including one with a bullet hole in a door.
Breyona's cousin, Quashawn Wheeler, heard the gunshots of the driveby shooting around 11:45 a.m. Friday. She said Breyona was outside just talking to some friends.
Police say, while the shooting investigation is early, it appears that Breyona was not the intended target.
According to authorities, the suspect fled in a black four-door car. Police have not announced any arrests.
Police are hoping surveillance video from the apartment complex will be able to help them in their investigation.
