'Ready for next chapter' | Severely underweight dog up for adoption after owner arrested for animal cruelty in DC

Tiger is now searching for his furever home.

WASHINGTON — Two-year-old Tiger is ready to start the next chapter in his life after authorities say his owner was arrested for animal cruelty in Northeast, D.C. on Friday.

After weighing only 48 pounds and being rescued from the NE DC apartment at the beginning of February, Tiger is now ready to find his forever home.

William Andrew Tellis was arrested and charged with animal cruelty, according to the Humane Rescue Alliance.

On Feb. 5, authorities with HRA did a walkthrough of Tellis' apartment and discovered Tiger who was severely underweight with his hip bones and rib cage showing. Authorities said there was also a strong scent of urine coming from Tiger's fur.

Authorities said there was no evidence of dog food in the apartment.

In addition to Tiger, authorities also found two large aquariums containing dark green water. Four red eared slider turtles and four goldfish were removed from the tanks, authorities said.

“Within 10 days of being in the care of the Humane Rescue Alliance, Tiger gained eight pounds simply through regular feedings and proper animal husbandry,” said Chris Schindler, Vice President of Field Services at HRA. “He’s now ready for the next chapter of his life where he will never experience cruelty again.”

Tiger is available for adoption at HRA’s New York Avenue NE adoption center. For more information, click here
