Man pulled from Potomac River at the Wharf dies hours later

DC Fire and EMS said the man later died from his injuries as a result of falling into the water at the Wharf.

WASHINGTON — A man who was rescued after falling into the water at the Wharf in Southwest D.C. Wednesday evening has died, police said.

D.C. Fire and EMS were called to the 800 block of Wharf Street Southwest shortly before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday after witnesses reported someone going into the water and not coming back out.

The man was pulled from the water by a D.C. police diver and later died at a local hospital, officials said.

Last summer, two women died in one night after being pulled from the Potomac River in separate water rescues. On July 21, a woman was pulled from the water in the 800 block of Maine Avenue Southwest, and sent to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

The second drowning happened at the Georgetown waterfront. Officials said an adult woman fell from a high point on the pier near the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Emergency responders pulled her out of the water, and transported her to the hospital with critical injuries, which she later succumbed to.
