Kennedy Center elevator malfunctions, traps visitors 30 feet below ground

Three young adults had to be rescued from a Kennedy Center elevator after it malfunctioned and traveled to the bottom of the elevator shaft.

WASHINGTON - DC Fire and EMS rescued three people trapped inside an elevator in the Kennedy Center Tuesday night after it malfunctioned and descended to the bottom of the shaft.

Officials said once the elevator reached the bottom of the elevator shaft, the only way to get out was for a firefighter to rappel down on top of the car and open the emergency hatch.

Firefighters used a specialized hauling system called an “Arizona Vortex” to lift each person one at a at time back up to ground level. They were put into a sling, then hauled to the surface.

None of the three trapped visitors to the Kennedy Center were hurt in the event. All three were young adults.
