WASHINGTON — If you're planning on ringing in the new year with a night out on the town, chances are you'll need a way to get home (safely). Metro is open late, and organizations in the District are giving travelers coupon codes to help offset the cost of transportation via Uber and Lyft.
Metro will be running until 2 a.m. on every line, so if you're planning on watching the ball drop, you won't have to rush off to catch the last train. Also, the transit agency will be charging off-peak fares, according to a Metro news release. Trains will also run from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. New Year's Day.
"To get the new decade off to a safe and celebratory start, Metro wants New Year's revelers to know that they can depend on Metro to get them home," Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Paul Wiedefeld said. "We're looking forward to the new decade ahead, and want thank our customers for making Metro their preferred way to move around the region."
If taking the Metro isn't convenient, or isn't your preferred method of transportation, local organizations are offering coupon codes to help offset the cost of an Uber or Lyft on New Years Eve.
Scrofano Law, a D.C.-based firm, is offering up to $10 off Uber rides. The firm, which partially specializes in DUI defense law, is only offering the promotion on up to 100 Uber rides, and the rides have to originate in D.C. between 12 and 4 a.m., the firm's website said.
"Our advice: if you’re going to drink, don’t drive. Use Uber or another rideshare app," the website said. "Even if you need a $200 ride home, it will cost you less than a potential DUI."
The Washington Regional Alcohol Program is offering discounts on Lyft rides from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. The WRAP works to prevent drunk driving, and has been providing discounted Lyft rides since Dec. 20. But there's a new code for up to $15 off on New Year's Eve.
In order to get the code, you have to be in Lyft's D.C. coverage area, and you can be a new or existing Lyft user. You can find the code on the WRAP website.
D.C.'s Streetcar is also running until 2 a.m., giving celebrators another way to safely get home.
