WASHINGTON -- The federal government is giving employees the option for unscheduled telework or unscheduled leave due to the wintry mix and snow falling in the D.C. metro Thursday morning.

According to OPM.gov non-emergency employees have to contact their supervisors if they plan on using unscheduled leave or unscheduled telework.

Employees who are telework-ready will be expected to telework for the whole day or take unscheduled leave.

Emergency employees are expected to report to their work locations on time unless told otherwise.

Several schools in the area delayed their openings or have closed for the day due to the wintry weather. Some school districts in the immediate area, including D.C. Public Schools and Prince George's County Public Schools opted to stay open, despite other neighboring school districts closing.

Snowfall started around 4 a.m. Thursday morning and is expected to last throughout the morning into the afternoon. Gradually as temps warm up throughout the day, a transition into a cold rain is expected to occur across the area from south to north between the late morning and early afternoon.
