DC restaurant owner gives back to the immigrant community

On any given day at Sakina Halal Grill, owner Kazi Mannan serves the homeless, immigrants and anyone who can't afford a meal. He hands out chicken with a side of respect.

WASHINGTON - A nationwide rally is planned to protest the Trump Administration's current immigration policy. The Families Belong Together rally will happen Saturday, June 30th. In D.C., the rally is planned for Lafayette Square.

One restaurant owner in the District said he and his staff will be there. On any given day at Sakina Halal Grill on K Street, owner Kazi Mannan serves the homeless, immigrants and anyone who can't afford a meal. He hands out chicken with a side of respect.

In April, the Trump Administration started a "zero-tolerance policy." Adults who illegally cross the border can be charged and put in jail away from their children.

Mannan called pictures from the border of children being separated from their parents a scar on American history.

He immigrated more than 20 years ago from Pakistan with only $3 in his pocket.

While driving a limo, he often would see homeless people looking through garbage for food. He knew once he opened his own restaurant, he would also open his heart and serve free meals.

"As a human being, this is our responsibility, moral responsibility, to not let them tear apart families here in this country and anywhere in the world," said Mannan.

The restaurant will continue to offer free meals to those in need. Mannan said it's just one small gesture, so he can only imagine what could be if everyone came together.
