WASHINGTON -- A 7-year-old boy has been reunited with his mother at a D.C. area airport early Friday morning after they were separated at the border.

The Guatemalan boy and his mother were detained at the U.S. Border on May 19 near San Luis, Ariz.

Darwin flew from Phoenix to BWI Airport t to be reunited with his mother, 38-year-old Beata Mariana de Jesus Mejia-Mejia, Friday morning.

Mejia-Mejia and her son were separated two days after being taken into custody at the border. She was released last week, but her son remained in custody.

She even sued the Trump administration to try to get her son back. Eventually the Justice Department agreed to release him.

During a press conference at the airport Friday morning, Mejia-Mejia said she hopes other families will see their story and fight to get their kids back.

"I thank God I have him here with me. Even though he is sad, but no one is going to separate us again," she said.

Both mother and son will head to Texas while they wait for the decision on an asylum application.
