Firefighters acted quickly to save a 3-year-old child from a burning van on Tuesday morning.

Around 8 a.m., DC Fire and EMS were called to a vehicle fire on Nannie Helens Burroughs Ave in NE. Once there, they found a minivan on fire in the parking lot of daycare connected to a church.

The driver was transporting about four or five children when the fire began. In the panic to remove items from the burning vehicle, the driver believed all children had gotten out of the van as well, police said.

Firefighters were putting water on the fire and had it mostly contained to the engine when one firefighter noticed a child strapped into a third-row seat. They were able to quickly retrieve the 3-year-old boy who did not suffer any burns, but was transported to the hospital to be treated for issues related to smoke inhalation.

It’s unclear whether or not the van was connected to the daycare.
