18 American University students expelled for hazing, violence

Several students at American University are accused of underage drinking, hazing and physical violence.

Several students at American University are accused of underage drinking, hazing and physical violence.

According to the university, 19 students violated the Student Conduct Code related to their involvement with Epsilon Iota (EI), an unrecognized group.

The so-called underground fraternity provided assistance to and perpetuated the activities of an unrecognized group engaged in prohibited conduct, according to a university spokesperson.

“This group has perpetuated and systematically presented a threat to the safety and well-being of our students,” said Fanta Aw, American University Interim Vice President of Campus Life. “This should send a strong message to anyone involved with groups engaged in activities prohibited by the Conduct Code."

American University is not releasing names or individual information on those disciplined.

The sanctions imposed in these cases included 18 dismissals and one disciplinary probation.
