DC police: Suspect fired shots at Uber in Northeast

The Uber driver was in the process of dropping off three passengers when a gunman opened fire, injuring the driver and stopping the vehicle.

WASHINGTON — An Uber driver was shot in the hand after a suspect fired multiple shots, hitting his vehicle in Northeast, DC police said.

The driver told police he was in the process of dropping off three passengers around 11:30 p.m. Friday when he saw an unknown man standing at the corner of 17th Place and Otis Place.

The driver said he heard gunshots, his back window shattered and realized he had been shot in the hand, according to a police report.

The passengers in the car told police they saw the unknown man fire the shots causing them to yell at the driver to keep going. One of the victims told police they thought the gunfire was the sound of fireworks.

The victims got out of the car and fled in the 3700 block of 17th Place but later returned to the scene to talk to authorities.

The driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. One of the victims had scratches on their face from the shattered window glass, according to police.

One of the victims described the suspect as a male wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.

The Uber sustained gunshots on the rear driver's side window and tire, and the driver's side door and front fender.

Police have not released any further details about the shooting and are asking anyone with information to call them at 202-727-9099.
