Parents push state to make Bethesda intersection safer

They voted on the state installing speed cameras, designating the area a school zone.

Bethesda, Md (WUSA9) — Emotions flew at Walt Whitman High School in Montgomery County on Monday night almost as fast as parents say drivers are flying down nearby River Road.

"We need something done now," said Susan Eagle. The mother said her four children use the intersection daily.

A family of three were killed along the stretch in February 2016. Their car was hit by a driver going more than one hundred miles per hour.

On Monday, parents voted on safety proposals by the State Highway Administration. They voted on the state installing speed cameras, designating the area a school zone.

Parents gave a nod of approval to a new crosswalk, while some advocated a complete redesign of the intersection.

"People want safety in the crosswalk," said Eagle. "Our family uses it 25 times a week. It's very important to me that we are protected when we are using it."

Parents, like Deborah Goldman, were encouraged that so many turned out for the meeting including students.

"Clearly people really want to make sure that the section of River Road that is so dangerous is slowed down," said Goldman.

"It just shows that our community cares," said Eagle.
