Area's oldest school for children with learning differences slated to shut down but extending school year by 5 weeks

The board of Kingsbury Day School agreed to extend the school year by five weeks into the summer.

WASHINGTON — Some good news for parents at Washington D.C.’s oldest private school for children with learning differences set to shut down.

The board of Kingsbury Day School agreed to extend the school year by five weeks into the summer.

Earlier this month, we were the first to tell you that the 81-year-old private school was closing due to financial troubles and low enrollment.

Enrollment has plummeted from 255 down to just 55 students, then a pending sale of the building fell through. So after 81 years, the board says their only option is to shut the school down.

The Extended School Year program will only be available to half of the students enrolled, but the development still comes as a relief to parents who say at least their children will receive occupational therapy in those five weeks while they look to transfer their child to another school setting.

Meanwhile, fundraising efforts continue to raise the nearly $2 million needed to keep the doors open. One parent has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise the money.
