Two teens are being charged after they were found to be behind social media threats regarding a possible shooting at Walt Whitman Middle School.

A 14- and 15-year-old from the Alexandria area were each charged with one count of threats to commit serious bodily harm to persons on school property, according to Fairfax County police.

Police learned about the threat on February 17. An investigation happened, which led police to the teens involved. The names of the teenagers are not being released, due to their ages.

According to the authorities the suspects turned themselves in. They were then sent home to their parents after a detention hearing. They are under electronic monitoring.

The investigation revealed that the boys were trying to impress a girl and did not actually intend on carrying out the threat.
