Jazz Concert to Help First Generation College Students Attend College

The non-profit, First Generation College Bound, Inc, is hosting a jazz concert at Laurel High School Sunday to support more than 100 students in its program.

LAUREL, Md. — A local non-profit that supports first generation college students is hosting an evening of jazz Sunday to raise money for its College Success program.

For almost 30 years, First Generation College Bound, Inc (FGCB)  has helped hundreds of students with dreams of going to college.

The non-profit, which supports and inspires youth from low-income or first generation college bound families, has 159 students enrolled this year. The goal is to help close to 200 students attend college this fall and events like the "College Success & All That Jazz," which is happening tomorrow, will do that.

"We not only raise funds to help these kids attend college, but we're also there to help prevent the summer meltdown, "said Joe Fisher, the organization's founder and CEO.

The evening of Jazz will take place at Laurel High School's auditorium from 4p.m. until 7p.m.

Renowned pianist Tony Walker and his jazz trio will be performing for the crowd. There will be a welcome reception with light refreshments. All proceeds from the ticketed event will benefit the College Success Program.

Gavin Brown is a FGCB alumni and board member. He joined the program when he was 11 years old and tells WUSA9 it changed his life.

" From college field trips to learning from different people, I've just been impacted and I'm honored today to be the board chairman of the organization," Brown said. " I think a big part of getting into a different pipeline has really helped me."
