Chesapeake Police Department confirmed that 10 people were shot during a neighborhood gathering in the Holly Cove area of Chesapeake on Saturday.

Police responded to Holly Cove Drive and Airline Blvd. shortly before 10 p.m. for a report of a large party with traffic congestion.

While officers were responding to the scene, they received calls that shots had been fired, police said.

Upon arrival, police found multiple people had been shot.

Brandon Smith, 27, of Suffolk, Va died as result of his injuries, police said.

According to officials, police later determined through an investigation that the shooting began with an altercation between two groups of people.

The altercation erupted into gun fire with both groups shooting at each other resulting in several innocent victims being struck by gunshots, police said.

Police said the shooting would be describe as "one or more suspects targeting innocent bystanders with the intent of causing death or injury."

No arrests have been made at this time nor is there any suspect information.

The incident is still under investigation.
