FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. — A year ago, flood waters rushed through the city of Frederick. It damaged homes and businesses. It truly devastated the city’s little league field. While the city has moved on, the field continues to be unplayable to this day.
“A lot of the old timers who used to play here say they don’t remember ever not playing. They’re shocked we still aren’t,” Frederick Little League president Rick Wilson said.
The mid-May 2018 storm turned the field into a quagmire. The rushing waters also damaged and destroyed most of the team equipment.
“Honestly, after the story you aired, we got donations pouring in; equipment and money,” Wilson said.
Thanks to WUSA9 viewers help, the Frederick Little League was back in play the rest of the season.
They also had no problem getting started for the 2019 season either.
No amount of donations could fix the big problem, the baseball field.
“It’s been so wet that you cant get the heavy equipment on it,” Wilson said. “This is first time the infield has been dry.”
A year after, the devastating effects of the storm don’t just linger. They continue to create a major problem. That’s why the little league has played all away games and practiced at another location. Still, no end in sight for the rain delay.
“We had practice the other night and one of the kids said, ‘When are getting back to our field?’“ Wilson explained.
“I just said, ‘I don’t know.’”
