Respiratory outbreak confirmed at second assisted-living facility in Fairfax Co.

There is no evidence linking this outbreak to the other outbreak reported at Greenspring.

BURKE, Va. — A respiratory illness outbreak has been confirmed at another assisted-living facility in Fairfax County, Va., health officials announced on Wednesday. 

Heatherwood Retirement Community located in Burke, Va. has also experienced an outbreak of a respiratory illness. It is unclear how many people have been impacted by the outbreak at this facility.

It was first reported over the weekend that there was an outbreak at Greenspring Retirement Community. Three people have died from the outbreak at this assisted-living facility and at least 63 people have became ill. 

The two facilities are approximately less than nine miles away from each other. On Wednesday, health officials said there is no known cause for the outbreaks and there's no evidence linking the two. 

Officials are continuing to investigating the cause of the outbreak. There is also no evidence that the outbreak is affecting other area outside of the assisted-living facilities.
