DC remembers Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on anniversary of his assassination

Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee April 4, 1968.

Family and friends of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gathered to remember him at his memorial on the 51st anniversary of his assasination.

Martin Luther King III, King Jr.'s son, was joined by his daughter Yolanda King at the event.

He said his father would want Americans to continue to push for the peace King Jr. tried to achieve.

"Where would we be today if he had lived," King III said. "I would tend to think that our nation would not be divided."

But, Yolanda King said she was optimistic about America's future. She said the country has many young leaders to inspire it.

"We have new young activists that are helping make the world a better place," she said.

The Brandons traveled to King Jr.'s memorial from Richmond to pay their respects on Thursday.

Camille Brandon, a mother of six, said King Jr.'s death still speaks volumes to the world.

"We all want the same thing," she said. "Just because we are different races does not mean we are different people. We all want to be treated equally.
