Teenager shot in broad daylight in Triangle, Virginia not a random incident, police say

Residents told WUSA9 that they heard at least three gunshots and saw the teenager laying on the ground conscious and breathing. At least two homes were struck.

TRIANGLE, Va. — Prince William County Police are investigating a shooting that they believe intentionally targeted a 17-year-old boy, sending him to the hospital.

The shooting happened Wednesday just before 1:30 p.m. on the 17900 block of Old Triangle Road in Triangle, Virginia.

Witnesses say that the Prince William County high school student was shot in broad daylight outside a mobile home community where he lives. Officers with the Town of Dumfries Police Department were at the scene assisting county officials in the investigation.

Multiple residents told WUSA9 that they heard at least three gunshots and saw the teenager laying on the ground conscious and breathing. His clothing remained on the scene as detectives searched the area.

The victim was taken to an area hospital and is suffering from non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Police have since confirmed that the victim and an acquaintance -- a 16-year-old boy -- were walking in the area when a black sedan with tinted windows slowed down and the passengers inside made eye contact with the boys. The two teens then walked out of the road while the sedan turned around and began driving back toward them.

When the sedan neared the two teens, the driver pulled up before one passenger got out and fired multiple rounds, shooting the 17-year-old. The shooting suspect then got back into the car and drove away, according to a police update on Nov. 3.

Police believe the car's occupants were wearing all black clothing and were all possibly teenagers as well.

Investigators spent hours at the crime scene questioning witnesses and combing through evidence. The boy who was with the victim when the shooting occurred remained on the scene, speaking to detectives.

At least two homes were struck by the gunfire. One of the residents said the bullet pierced through his cabinets, but no one was hurt inside.

One of the neighbors told WUSA9 in Spanish that when she heard the shots, she dropped down on the floor with her kids and stayed there until she heard the police sirens arrive.

Police say the suspects involved in the shooting left the scene. Investigators have not provided a description or identification in relation to the incident. No arrests have been made in the case.

A Prince William County Public Schools representative was also on the scene to assess the situation.
