GREENBELT, Md. — The Greenbelt Police Department has identified and charged a man in connection with the fatal assault that left a coach and father of three stabbed to death in his home on Jan. 17.
The suspect, who has not yet been identified, is charged in the death of Billy Owens Smith, of Greenbelt. The investigation is currently ongoing as police are working to locate and identify the other suspects involved.
Three masked men broke into Smith's home on the 7900 block of Mandan Road in Greenbelt just before 11 a.m. Friday, police said.
Billy's son, Kadin Smith, said he was home and witnessed the attack on his father.
"I just went in the living room, and I see that my dad is trying to fight them off him. But, it already looked like he had been stabbed," Kadin said.
When officers arrived, police found 41-year-old Billy Owens Smith suffering from apparent stab wounds. Officers said they provided first aid on the scene, and Smith was taken to the University of Maryland Prince George's Hospital Center, where he died from his injuries.
Police said the initial investigation showed that three suspects broke into his apartment and stabbed Smith as they were running away from the scene. Police believe the incident wasn't random, but couldn't confirm whether or not Smith was targeted.
"That was the moment my whole life just shattered to pieces," Kristina said, who was working as a teacher at Prince George's County schools when she got the call.
"He was my soul mate. He was my best friend," she continued. "He was my rock. He was my king."
His family said he also coached football for the Boys and Girls Club and Intramural basketball. A GoFundMe was launched in order to help cover the cost of Smith's funeral.
Police are still searching for the suspects, whom they described as:
- Hispanic male, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a heavy build and curly medium-length hair, wearing all black clothing
- Brown-skinned male, wearing a black hoodie
- Black male, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 9 inches, with a dark complexion and slim build, wearing all black clothing
Police said all three suspects were wearing masks.
