Building evacuated after gas leak near White House

DC Fire and EMS crews called to 700 block of 15th Street in NW for a gas leak. No injuries reported.

WASHINGTON -- A 10-story building was evacuated near the White House after gas started to fill the business Tuesday morning, officials said. 

D.C. Fire and EMS crews were called around 8 a.m. to the 700 block of 15th Street in Northwest for a gas leak.When they arrived they found a 10-story building filling with gas.

The building appears to be under construction.   

Washington Gas will need to excavate the street in order to stop the leak. All buildings on the even side of the street have been evacuated. People are sheltering in place on the opposite side of the street. No injuries have been reported.

Crews will go back in the building, take additional readings and then determine when it is safe. 

Officials said it is an ongoing operation.
