The largest clear ice maze in the country is in DC for this weekend only, and it's free

The maze is free and open on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 9pm.

WASHINGTON — The largest clear ice maze in the country is in D.C., and you can walk through it for free.

CityCenterDC worked with Ice Lab Ice Sculptures in Baltimore to put together this winter pop-up for one weekend only.

Ashley Arias, a spokesperson for CityCenterDC, said the frozen fortress is made up of more than 300 blocks of 300-pound ice, totaling 110,000 pounds of ice.

Arias said Ice Lab helped coordinate 12 ice sculptors from across the country to create the blocks.

She said it took about two-and-a-half days to set up with two semi-trucks carrying in the ice.

The question on most visitors' minds was how do the group keeps the ice cold, especially in the above-freezing temperatures.

The answer? Lots of dry ice. Arias said they put dry ice on the top of the seven-foot walls, which trickles down to create a freezer effect on the ice.

The maze will be open from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. on December 14 through 15.

It is free to the public, but creators are asking for donations for Children's National Hospital.

One other big request from CityCenterDC: Please do not lick the ice.
