WASHINGTON — The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund has been helping preserve the legacy of those who served since the nonprofit's start in 1980. They're the reason the national memorial for Vietnam veterans -- more commonly known as The Wall -- exists, with roughly 5.6 million visitors a year.
Now the group needs your help. The Wall of Faces is a movement to digitally memorialize all 58,276 names that are inscribed on the monument, and it needs less than 300 photos for the project to be completed.
45 states, three U.S. territories and D.C. have found every photo for their fallen, but some states are still searching: Virginia, Michigan, California, Georgia and New York, as well as Puerto Rico.
Each state has a database full of the current photos and the ones still needed, which you can check out here. Those who know the fallen can submit their photo directly to the website, which will then make sure it gets matched to the name and information of the appropriate hero.
Even if service member has a photo attached to their name, the group said they are always searching for additional visuals and high-quality stills.
"Each name represents a life cut short and a family changed forever by their loss," the mission statement for the project reads. "Putting a face to every name helps further preserve their legacies."
