WASHINGTON, DC — With cold weather comes slippery sidewalks that can lead to foot and ankle sprains and fractures. The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics can treat any injury, and shared tips for at-home care.

  1. Know when to see a doctor. You may think it's a simple sprain, but if you can't walk, or you see a deformity or severe swelling, head to the physician. Ice packs and bandages can only do so much work.
  2. Use the R.I.C.E. method. After a fall that's injured your foot or ankle, you'll experience pain and swelling. Rest, ice packs, compression devices, and elevating your foot all help to bring down swelling and decrease pain. When icing your injury use a 20 minute on/20 minute off rotation to prevent numbness.
  3. Wear supportive footwear. If you're recovering from an injury or trying to prevent one, footwear is key. Cushioning and shock-absorption help alleviate pain if you're on your feet a large portion of the day. Orthotic shoes are available for people with preexisting conditions.
