Washington, DC (WUSA9) — Summer is almost here. Is your backyard ready? Here are tips from Lowe's to kick off the season.

  1. Get your grill game on. Summer equals barbecue season. Whether you prefer gas or charcoal, there are a variety of grills available to suit your needs. Some even double as smokers too. Turn your backyard into a pit master's paradise.
  2. Prepare your patio. Fact: food tastes better when it's eaten in the sun. If the party's happening outside, you don't want to bring it down by making everyone have dinner inside. Enjoy the grilled deliciousness on a great patio. If you're worried about catching too many rays, get a table with an umbrella. Go with either rust-resistant aluminum or wicker chairs that will hold up in the rain.
  3. Light up the fire pit. Fire pits are not just for camp sights or fancy restaurant patios. You can have one safely in your own yard. Some versions are more kid-friendly and perfect for roasting s'mores. Others are great for enjoying wine with friends when the night gets a little chilly.
  4. Show your pride. Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial start to summer, but it's also an important time to show appreciation. Hang a flag that will stand tall in the sunlight all summer long.
