Man injured after partial building collapse, house split in two in College Park

A round of severe storms early Tuesday evening caused damage in the City of College Park that ripped a house in half while a man was inside.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Residents in College Park woke up Wednesday morning to darkness as many homes were still without power and a path of destruction outside their houses.

A round of severe storms early Tuesday evening caused damage and chaos in the City of College Park, including a home that was ripped in half while a man was inside it.

WUSA9 spoke to two University of Maryland (UMD) students who live in the house located along Lakeland Road. According to the students, their roommate was inside the house during the time of the storm. The students said that firefighters arrived and found the man inside the house. They were able to remove him safely and he was taken to a nearby hospital. The students said neither of them was inside the house.

"The way it was destroyed was so... it's unbelievable," one of the students said. "I can't imagine what it was like for our roommate who was in there. Also like, what it would have looked like from the outside, just absolutely crazy."

The man's condition remains unknown, but the roommates have been staying in touch with him.

UMD Police tweeted just before midnight that the campus and its surrounding community were experiencing widespread power resulting from the severe weather. UMD decided to cancel all of the in-person and online summer classes Wednesday due to power outages. The university stated that it would provide assistance to those who remain on campus.

Pepo crews are traveling around the D.C region providing efforts to repair and restore power. If you are experiencing a power outage or a downed power line in your community, call Pepco at 1-877-737-2662 or online at Pepco.com
