Waterspouts swirl over Outer Banks, NC

The National Weather Service confirmed the waterspouts formed in the Kill Devil Hills area while a tornado warning was in effect.

DARE COUNTY, NC (WUSA9) - Severe weather whipped up several waterspouts in the Outer Banks Monday morning.

The National Weather Service confirmed the waterspouts formed in the Kill Devil Hills area while a tornado warning was in effect.

Residents and vacationers grabbed their phones to share photos and videos of the weather phenomenon on social media.

Waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water or move from land to water, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration described on its website. They have the same dangerous characteristics as a land tornado.
