WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- If fighting a parking ticket in the District has ever driven you crazy, we might have some good news for you.
The District is looking into streamlining the admittedly arduous process of contesting a ticket. It is all part of Councilmember Mary M. Cheh's proposed 'Transportation Reorganization Act of 2014'.
On Wednesday, Cheh, the Chairperson of the Committee on the Transportation and the Environment, held a public hearing on the bill in the Wilson Building. Cheh said the District needs to make changes to keep up with changes in how we now get around.
1.8 million parking tickets were slapped on car windshields in the District in Fiscal Year 2013 by one agency. Parking signs are handled by another. If you want to fight your ticket, that is a third agency. Lon Anderson, of AAA Mid-Atlantic says fighting a ticket can involve a two-year wait, "If they're going to give out this huge number of tickets, the city needs to have an adjudication process that's prepared to handle the appeals of those tickets and process them fairly and effectively and I don't think anyone will argue that we have a system that does that right now."
Cheh says the Act aims to create one super-agency to do what many do now, hopefully, streamlining everything parking ticket-related in the process, "I have in part of the legislation the creation of an ombudsman in the DMV so somebody that you can go to when you're caught in this nightmare loop."
The Act would also aim to do away with the Taxi Commission, and switch up which agency manages trees on streets. It is not a done deal yet, the Council says they are going to have a second public hearing after summer recess.
