Poles down on Rt. 1 in Alexandria, lanes closed

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA9) -- Several electrical poles are down and Route 1 is closed in both directions from Slaters Lane to First Street.

Alexandria Police say two northbound lanes are open on Route 1.

On its Facebook page, the police department asks residents to "Use caution in the area. Treat all uncontrolled intersections (no power or Officer directing traffic) as a four-way stop. Take turns and be patient."

Officials say fire department personnel on the scene.

A Dominion Power spokesperson says they received a call at 11:58 a.m. Friday for poles down. Crews found three broken poles and cross arms.

121 customers are still without power, Dominion Virginia Power reports. Crews are on the site now and hope to provide the majority of customers with power through rerouting. Dominion Virginia power hopes to have service restored to customers around 11 p.m.

Alexandria City officials say it could take up to 10 hours to remove the poles.

The Charles Houston Recreation Center & Memorial Pool are also closed until further notice due to the outage, according to city officials.
