National Bike to School Day is coming up

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- It's Spring and more people are biking in D.C. than ever. In fact, the number of bicyclists commuting to work went up 40 percent from 2000 to 2010.

May is National Bike Safety Month and Wednesday is National Bike to School Day. We have 108 schools participating in our area. It's such a fun day for kids, but we all need to remember a few things:

  • Drivers have to share the road with bicyclists who have the same rights including riding in the traffic lane. Be especially cautious around children on bikes as new riders can be unsteady and unpredictable.
  • Give at least three feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist.
  • Check your mirrors before you turn or open your door. Never honk your horn at a bicyclist as that can startle the cyclist who might then swerve off the road or into traffic.

National Bike to Work Day is also coming up on May 16.
