1 dead after crash with police cadet on Beltway near Rt 50

LANHAM, Md. (WUSA9) -- One person has died after a crash involving a police vehicle on the Outer Loop of the Beltway Friday morning.

The crash happened around 8:50 a.m. on the Outer Loop between Route 50 and Annapolis Road.

Police say 59-year-old Karen Holt-Williams of Temple Hills was hit when a police vehicle driven by a Maryland State Police civilian employee hit two other vehicles.

The driver of the Maryland State Police vehicle is identified as 18-year-old Cadet Sebastian L. Reyes. Police say Reyes has been a vehicle enforcement cadet for eight months.

Police say Reyes was on routine assignment and was driving 2006 Ford Expedition without lights or siren activated when he used a crossover for emergency vehicle south of Rt. 50 to access the Outer Loop and go the opposite direction. Investigation revealed that Reyes sped into the fast lane, lost control and sideswiped a 2000 Lincoln driven by the victim.

The Lincoln then traveled to the left across the Beltway and struck the jersey wall on the fast shoulder. The Ford Expedition went into a spin and struck a 2011 Subaru Outback driven by Amy A. Nash, police say.

Holt-Williams died on the way to the hospital. Reyes and another State Police cadet riding with him refused treatment, police say. The third driver, 55-year-old Amy A. Nash of Largo was not injured in the crash. Two passengers in her car were also not injured.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is conducting a detailed crash investigation. A Maryland State Police administrative investigation will also be conducted. Reyes has been placed on leave.

Anyone who witnessed this crash is urged to contact Cpl. Zimmerman, the Maryland State Police Crash Team investigator. He can be reached at the State Police La Plata Barrack at 301-392-1231.

On the Inner Loop in the same area, traffic was slow due to a gathering of Jehovah's Witnesses at FedEx Field.
