RESTON, Va. (WUSA9) -- A pedestrian who was struck by a tractor trailer on southbound Fairfax County Parkway on Monday morning has died, according to Fairfax County Police.
The man was hit on Fairfax County Parkway between Franklin Farm and West Ox Road just before 6:30 a.m., say police.
He suffered life threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance from the scene. Monday afternoon, police told us that 54-year-old Clayton Young of Oak Hill, Va. had died.
Police say that a Freightliner tractor-trailer was traveling southbound on Fairfax County Parkway approaching the intersection of Fox Mill Road when the driver saw an SUV on the right shoulder underneath the Pinecrest Road overpass.
"As the Freightliner got closer, a pedestrian apparently stepped from in front of the SUV and into the path of the oncoming truck. The driver of the truck unsuccessfully attempted to avoid the pedestrian. The truck hit the pedestrian and then stopped," according to a press release from Fairfax County Police.
Southbound Fairfax County Parkway was shut down between Pinecrest Road to Franklin Farm Road during the investigation.
