WASHINGTON (WUSA9/AP) -- The D.C. Department of Public Works is cracking down on parking along H Street in the Benning corridor starting Monday.

Ahead of the streetcar service expected later this year, DPW is beginning to issue tickets to enforce parking rules.

Officials want to ensure streetcars have a clear path in the corridor, which runs from the Hopscotch Bridge to the old Spingarn High School. The crackdown includes strict enforcement of a white boundary line that gives streetcars room to run.

Drivers parked illegally on streetcar tracks will receive a $100 parking ticket. Vehicles may also be towed to clear the streetcar's path and then relocated within the immediate neighborhood.

The enforcement clears the way for testing the rest of the summer, with service to begin by the end of the year.
