WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The summer travel season has begun, but the next few months will be tough for vacationers to Delaware.
The heavily used I-495 bridge over the Christina River in Wilmington has been closed because of tilting supporting columns since June 2.
The bridge will remain closed until at least Labor Day, possibly longer if a section of the bridge will need to be rebuilt.
The bridge carries about 90,000 vehicles a day on an 11-mile bypass around Wilmington.
Traffic is being shifted onto really heavy Interstate 95 through downtown. From our area headed North, Route 1 is an option. Extra time will be needed especially over the weekends.
