ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Jay Gruden says he was always "bitter" about not getting a chance to play in the NFL. He's in the Arena Football League Hall of Fame, but he doesn't know where they keep the plaque.

Those are just some of the influences that shape the mindset of the new Washington Redskins coach.

Gruden is demanding on his quarterbacks, but he comes across as a players' coach, blending in with everyone on the field during practice.

He says he wants to keep the energy level high and make sure the players are having fun. He says discipline is important, but that doesn't mean he has to yell on every snap.

The Redskins opened a three-day minicamp Tuesday.
