The Ravens didn't start free agency out with many headlines, but that certainly changed today. The Ravens have agreed to terms with longtime Carolina Panther's wide receiver Steve Smith, 34, to a three year deal. Baltimore also resigned linebacker Daryl Smith, 31, to 4 year deal worth $16 million.
Steve Smith played his entire 13 year career with the Carolina Panthers. Along the way he became the Panthers all time leader in receptions (836), receiving yards (12,197) and touchdowns (67). Last year Smith caught 64 passes for 745 yards and four touchdowns.
Daryl Smith played his first season with the Ravens last year after nine seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Smith led the Ravens last season with 123 combined tackles.
Day 2: (03/12/14)
The Ravens locked up another one of their own today, resigning wide receiver Jacoby Jones to a 4 year deal. Jones has played the last two seasons with Baltimore and has been the primary punt and kick returner.
Baltimore was relatively quiet the first day of free agency, only resigning left tackle Eugene Monroe. Former Raven defensive end Arthur Jones signed with the Indianapolis Colts yesterday.
According to the Baltimore Ravens website, the Ravens are in contact with former Cleveland Brown's center Alex Mack. Since being selected in the first round of the 2009 draft, Mack has started every game in his five seasons in the NFL.
Two other players on the Ravens radar are Panther's wide receiver Steve Smith and former Texan's tight end Owen Daniels. Smith's agent confirmed reports that Smith has played his last snap for the Panthers and will either be traded or released. Daniels is visiting the Green Bay Packers today.
Day 1: (03/11/14)
The Baltimore Ravens locked up left tackle Eugene Monroe, 26, to a 5 year deal worth $37.5 million, with an average salary of $7.5 million. In 2013, the Ravens acquired Monroe in a mid-season trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Ravens surrendered 48 sacks last year, 4th most in the NFL. Monroe was a first round pick by the Jaguars in 2009 and has started all but 3 games in his first five seasons as a pro.
The Ravens were unable to resign defensive end Arthur Jones, who signed a 5 year deal worth $33 million with the Indianapolis Colts today.
According to the Baltimore Ravens website, the Ravens have interest in former Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman and former Texans tight end Owen Daniels. Other players of interest for Baltimore include tight end Brandon Pettigrew and wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders.
