VIERA, Fla. (AP) - Stephen Strasburg is a first-time father. His elbow is healthy. And he's determined to learn how to hold runners on base.

The Washington Nationals right-hander threw his first formal bullpen session of spring training Sunday. He said afterward his arm is doing "great" after offseason surgery to remove bone chips from his right elbow.

He focused much of his session on his timing out of the stretch, hoping baserunners will no longer consider him an easy mark when eyeing a steal of second.

Strasburg says he has a different perspective now that he's a dad. A good way to get him to smile is to mention his baby daughter.

He also talks about staying humble. He wishes he didn't have one of the bigger lockers given to the top pitchers.
