VIERA, Fla. (AP) - The Washington Nationals have acquired catcher Jose Lobaton and two prospects from the Tampa Bay Rays for pitcher Nathan Karns.

The deal gives the Nationals a backup for Wilson Ramos, who has never played in more than 108 games in a season because of various injuries.

Lobaton started 76 games for the Rays last season and batted .249. He was expendable because the Rays re-signed catcher Jose Molina and traded for Ryan Hanigan.

Karns made his major league debut last season, going 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA in three starts for the Nationals.

The Nationals also received outfielder Drew Vettleson and pitcher Felipe Rivero in Wednesday's deal. To make room on the 40-man roster, Washington placed pitcher Erik Davis on the 60-day disabled list with a sprained right elbow.
