WASHINGTON (WUSA 9) -- Friendship Collegiate Academy's athletic director Michael Hunter confirmed to WUSA 9 Sports anchor Dave Owens that football coach Azaar Abdul-Rahim is leaving the school to take a position at the University of Alabama.
"He will be taking a leave of absence from Friendship this coming fall and joining Alabama's staff," said Hunter.
Hunter said Rahim will join Alabma's staff as a Defensive Analyst. Hunter added that Rahim's "leave of absence" is initially for a year and then he will determine if he wants to return.
"He's leaning toward returning," said Hunter. "This didn't catch me totally by surprise because there's always the possibility of movement when someone's put in the kind of work Aazaar has," said Hunter.
Under Rahim, Friendship Collegiate has become a perennial football power and has helped more than 98 student-athletes earn college scholarships.
Hunter, who served as offensive coordinator last season in addition to his duties as athletic director, will take over as head coach.
"The kids were disappointed but ultimately understand coach had to do what was in the best interest of he an his family," said Hunter.
