WASHINGTON (WUSA 9) -- The District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA) will be hosting the inaugural Pigskin Kickoff Classic on Sept. 6 and 12.
DCSAA Executive Director Clark Ray said this event provides an opportunity for public, private and charter high school teams to play each other.
"This event highlights football in D.C. for student-athletes," Ray said.
He said student-athletes are competitive by nature.
"This helps create new rivalries," Ray said. "It's healthy for the sport of football."
Ray said the idea behind the Pigskin Kickoff Classic came from D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray. He said the event fulfills Mayor Gray's vision for high school sports.
He also said this is the start of a tradition that fans can look forward to yearly.
"We are hopeful that this will be the first of many," Ray said.
The event starts at noon on Saturday, Sept 6 at Eastern High School. The first game features Anacostia Indians and the St. Albans Bulldogs. At 2:30 p.m. the Eastern Ramblers will play the Maret Frogs and at 5 p.m. the McKinley Tech Trainers will play the Archbishop Carroll Lions.
The event continues on Friday, Sept. 12 at Catholic University. This game will feature the Wilson Tigers and the Friendship Collegiate Knights.
