Potomac's Chikamso Chukwu excels on the basketball court and in the classroom. She boasts a 4.41 GPA and earned a full scholarship to the college of William and Mary. WUSA 9

DUMFRIES, Va. (WUSA 9) -- Chikamso Chukwu has been playing basketball for the Potomac Panthers for four years, from JV to varsity ball.

"When I had her as a freshman she barely talked, she wouldn't say two words," said head coach Tiffany Jenkins.

In that time, #14 grew in talent.

"She's only 5-foot-6, 5-foot-7, but she plays like she's 6-foot-4," said Jenkins. "She's a monster on the boards."

Over the years, Chukwu also turned into a leader on the court.

"Not only was she more vocal, but the way she played -- it was like she just exploded out of nowhere," said Jenkins, who credits Chi Chi, as she's called, with having a calming influence on her teammates.

The American, born of Nigerian parents, is an active member of Potomac's community and also excels off the court. The senior helped start a robotics team at her school with Jocelyn Quispe, and they went on to the state championship.

"She' very organized and it helps when chaotic things are happening, especially with her team's robot," said Quispe.

Chukwu is a jock and science nerd, which are usually mutually exclusive terms.

"That stereotype is not at all true at my school. The kids who play sports are really smart because it takes focus to play sports and sports actually help you in school," said Chukwu.

The apparent over-achiever is also creative. She's the editor of Potomac's literary magazine and first chair violin in the school orchestra. Chukwu has a 4.41 GPA and has been accepted to the College of William and Mary. She received the William and Mary Scholar award, which comes with a full, four year tuition.

"I don't know how to describe her besides the word phenomenal because she excels in everything she does," said Jenkins. "It's not like she does all of these activities and she's only good at some of them. No, she's excellent at everything she does."
